1.7 Lakh Illegal Migrants Detected in Assam Since 1985: Minister

More than 1.70 lakh illegal foreigners have beeen detected in Assam, while about 31,000 have been pushed back since the Assam Accord was signed in1985, informed Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora in the State Assembly. Bora told the House that in the past year alone, 1,421 were sent back under orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs and 52 declared foreigners were expelled under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950. Bora said that according to the provisions of the Assam Accord, 1,37,152 immigrants who entered after March 25, 1971, and another 33,485 who arrived between 1966 and 1971 have been identified and declared foreigners. He added that from 1985 to March 2013, 29,663 illegal foreigners were sent back through the ‘Push Back’ process, while between 2013 and January 2026, 468 were deported, including 458 convicted foreigners.
