Cairn Oil and Gas, Vedanta Ltd. launched a Handloom Centre in Ramdhenu Village Organisation on 13th March 2024 to promote sustainable livelihood among Self-Help Groups in Borpathar area near Golaghat district. This has been developed as a part of the livelihood generation initiatives in partnership with Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission and District Handloom Department, Govt of Assam.
The Handloom Centre was inaugurated by Dr Steve Moore, Deputy CEO. Other dignitaries Mr. Gary Ingram, President – Exploration, Mr. Mandeep Narang, Director – RJ North, Mr. Arunabh Parashar, Head of Exploration and Mr. Ranjan Trivedi, Regional Head – Northeast from Cairn were present. The project involves 3 Village Organisations, 60 SHGs, with 28 already registered under the “Swanibhar Nari” scheme under the Govt. of Assam. The Handloom Department, Govt of Assam, is directly procuring over 2000+ Gamosas from each registered SHG under this scheme, at a fixed price of INR 270 per unit.
The project was carried out under Cairn’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative led by Mr. Ajoy Bezbaruah. The Cairn CSR team has provided government schemes to community members in Golaghat district near Hazarigaon well site, establishing a Handloom Centre to enable women to locally produce and earn a livelihood. Cairn is committed to exploring and developing the hydrocarbon potential of Northeast. 200 women from the various SHGs took part in the event.
