The Ri Bhoi District administration in Meghalaya has issued a cautionary notice as water levels at the Umiam Dam approach capacity. As of August 13, the water level stood at 3209.68 feet, prompting officials to warn of potential releases in the event of heavy rainfall. “People staying in the downstream of Umiam dam are requested to be extra cautious,” the Deputy Commissioner stated in a press release.
To avoid mishaps, the administration urged the populace to stay out of rivers and streams. The alert goes beyond just potential water hazards. Authorities emphasized the potential of electrocution in the event of flooding and advised people to “stay away from electric poles or power lines.” This warning is issued during the monsoon season, which is when the area usually receives more rain.
During times of high water, the Umiam Dam, a vital piece of infrastructure for power generation and flood control, needs to be managed carefully. To protect their safety in the upcoming days, locals are urged to stay up to date on weather conditions and heed government directives.
