The All Assam Engineers’ Association (AAEA) has strongly endorsed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Dr. Mohan Bhagwat’s recent appeal for environmental preservation, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices to protect the planet. During his annual Vijayadashami address on October 12, Bhagwat stressed the importance of conserving water, reducing single-use plastics, and increasing tree plantations. He also criticized the current consumer-driven development model, which he described as harmful to the environment, and advocated for a return to sustainable practices rooted in Indian traditions.
The AAEA, led by President Er Kailash Sarma, Working President Er NJ Thakuria, and Secretary Er Inamul Hye, echoed Bhagwat’s concerns and urged the Assam government to promote rainwater harvesting on a large scale. Given Assam’s abundant rainfall, the association suggested the state could serve as a model for regions facing future water shortages, with estimates predicting severe water scarcity by 2050.
The AAEA recommended making rainwater harvesting mandatory in urban households, especially in apartment complexes, citing its cost-effectiveness. They also warned against the overuse of groundwater for irrigation, calling for further research to conserve dwindling reserves.
