Air India To Suspend Delhi-Washington Flights From September 1, 2025

Air India has announced it will suspend its Delhi–Washington, DC route starting September 1, citing multiple operational challenges. The airline attributed the move primarily to a temporary shortfall in its fleet, as it has begun retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft under a major upgrade programme. This initiative, aimed at enhancing customer experience, will render several planes unavailable through at least the end of 2026.

The decision also comes amid ongoing difficulties caused by the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, which complicates long-haul operations and results in extended flight paths and increased complexity. Additionally, the move follows a tragic incident in June, where one of Air India’s Dreamliners crashed after take-off in Ahmedabad, killing nearly all 242 people on board and several on the ground.

Passengers with bookings on the suspended route after September 1 will be contacted and provided with alternative options, including full refunds or rebooking on other flights. Air India will offer one-stop connections to Washington via New York, Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco through its interline partners—Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta. Meanwhile, the airline continues non-stop operations to six North American destinations, including Toronto and Vancouver.
