Amid LPG Concerns, Assam Plans Expansion of Piped Natural Gas Network

When the country is staring at a LPG shortage due to the war in the Middle East, Assam government is mulling the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) coverage in the state. Assam Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota held a meeting with the MDs and CEOs of Assam Gas Company Ltd (AGCL), Purba Bharati Gas Pvt. Ltd. (PBGPL), and North East Gas Distribution Company Ltd. (NEGDCL) to review the current coverage of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in the state on Monday and discussed the scope for expanding PNG connectivity to reach more domestic consumers in Assam over the next 90 days. He asked the companies to submit their expansion plans on Tuesday so that residents can avail this facility on priority. PNG has emerged as a viable alternative to LPG cylinders in India at a time when the country’s s LPG supplies have been disrupted due to global shipping constraints after Iran halted traffic through the Gulf and the Strait of. Hormuz. Recently, oil ministry official Sujata Sharma asked LPG consumers to shift to piped natural gas where possible. About 333 million households use LPG cylinders, and more than 150 million get gas supplies through pipelines in India. Sharma said about six million LPG-consuming households could easily switch to piped gas use.
