Artists Stage Protest Demanding Reopening Of Rabindra Bhawan In Guwahati

In a strong show of unity and cultural concern, artists, playwrights, lyricists, and socially conscious citizens gathered in front of the long-closed Rabindra Bhawan in Guwahati, demanding its immediate reopening. The protest, led by the Cultural Unity Forum, Assam (Sanskritik Aikyamancha, Asom), reflected growing frustration over the closure of one of Assam’s most iconic cultural venues.

Closed for over three years, Rabindra Bhawan has been a vital space for theatre and cultural performances, holding deep emotional and historical significance for generations of artists.

“This isn’t just a building—it’s a symbol of our cultural soul,” said a protester. Another questioned the delay, asking why massive flyovers can be built swiftly, yet Rabindra Bhawan remains shut.

Protesters urged the government to complete scientific renovations within six months, reduce rental fees for struggling performers, and improve district libraries and government auditoriums.

Over 30 theatre and cultural groups supported the movement, highlighting the venue’s importance in sustaining Assam’s cultural identity and heritage.
