Northeast now has its first-ever Chess Grandmaster with International Master Mayank Chakraborty from Assam achieving the final norm in Sweden, to be the 94th Grandmaster of India. The 16-year-old has officially secured his final Grandmaster norm at the Eighth GM Tournament in Hotel Stockholm North, Sweden. Mayank dominated the field with a stellar performance, finishing first with seven points out of nine. By defeating top seeds and maintaining an unbeaten streak in his final rounds, he has also crossed the mandatory 2500 FIDE rating barrier to be a Grandmaster.
With this achievement, Mayank, who is a student at South Point School Guwahati, became the first-ever Grandmaster from Assam and the Northeast region. “Mayank dedicated his title to the chess players and enthusiasts of the North-East, expressing hope that this historic milestone will inspire many more titled players from the region in the years to come,” a social media post of South Point School, read. Mayank began his chess journey at the Assam Chess Club, a unit of Akshayam, where he first learned the game and started his rise through the ranks of competitive chess.
“His achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a landmark moment for chess in Assam and the North-East, opening a new chapter for the region’s presence on the global chess map,” the post read.
Meanwhile, Mukuta Deka, president of All Assam Chess Association and Rajib Dhar, general secretary of All Assam Chess Association congratulated Mayank for the historic achievement.
