Assam CM reassures preservation of trees in Dighalipukhuri

Massive protest have emerged out in the city Guwahati regarding cutting down of trees in Dighalipukhuri area. These trees have been serving the city in keeping the echo system balanced especially during the summers by providing necessary shades and fresh air.

Cutting down of trees for flyover construction in the city has impacted alot leading to unbearable summers. These age old trees are the hearts of the city Guwahati.

Responding to protest, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I want to assure you that the government is deeply committed to preserving our city’s heritage and environment while advancing infrastructure. In constructing the flyovers from Dighalupukhuri to Noonmati, we are sincerely working to protect the old trees in the area. I urge all stakeholders to allow the Public Works Department a few days to explore an alternative proposal and assess its feasibility.”

Advocate Angshuman Bora has also urged saying, “How can the Assam government even think of destroying this heritage site? We urge the Gauhati High Court to take suo moto cognizance of this issue.”
