Assam Fog Tragedy: One Dead, One Missing as Car Plunges into Champabati River

Dense winter fog continues to disrupt road safety in Assam, and on Sunday midnight it claimed yet another life. With visibility dropping sharply across the Northeast, a tragic accident unfolded at Yogi Ghopa–Boalimari in Bongaigaon district, where a four-wheeler skidded off the road and plunged into the Champabati river.

Four people were inside the vehicle. Driver Akidul Islam and passenger Jubbar Ali survived, but Azahar Ali Mondal remains missing. The body of Bokkar Ali was recovered by rescue teams and identified as deceased. Police sources confirmed that the four men were returning home to Barpeta after visiting a local fair. Their Dhubri-bound vehicle, bearing registration number AS-26-J-4352, lost control along the Kabaitari–Shalbhari stretch, rolled down a slope and fell straight into the river. Heavy fog and high speed are believed to have contributed to the accident, though the exact cause is still being examined.

Survivor Jubbar Ali, still shaken by the ordeal, recounted the terrifying moments before the crash. He said they had just reached Boalimari when the deceased youth took hold of the steering. Suddenly, the vehicle swerved violently. Jubbar and the driver somehow managed to escape, but they could not see where the others disappeared in the darkness and fog. The incident occurred around midnight as they were returning from the Barpeta fair.

Shortly after the mishap, police from Yogi Ghopa station, personnel from the Majer Alga outpost and SDRF teams arrived at the site. Divers were deployed to search the submerged vehicle and the waters of the Champabati. While Bokkar Ali’s body was recovered, the search continues for missing passenger Azahar Ali Mondal.

Questions remain about whether dense fog alone caused the tragedy or if there were additional factors. Police have launched a detailed investigation, and the exact reason behind the fatal accident will become clear only after their findings are complete.
