On August 21, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged that despite ULFA(I)’s substantial decrease in influence and numbers over time, the outlawed terrorist group is still active in the state. There are still about 400 ULFA(I) cadres in the Myanmar camp, according to CM Sarma, who also stated that the government is pressuring the organization’s leadership to hold talks. The chief minister of Assam also explained that although ULFA(I)’s influence has diminished over time, neither the Union Home Minister nor the chief minister have ever denied the organization’s existence in the state. He continued by saying that the peace negotiations are ongoing and disclosed that he keeps in contact with Paresh Barua, the leader of ULFA(I).
