Bak Purnima Poya Day was celebrated with great pomp in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, which marks the second visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka. On the occasion of this auspicious festival, an exhibition on the rich Buddhist heritage of India was organized in Colombo.
This day has special significance among the followers of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, which is why Bak Purnima Poya Day has also been declared a religious holiday in the country. A grand program was organized here to celebrate the religious festival, in which Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha was present.
Buddhism, originating from India, is a significant religion in Sri Lanka, fostering strong cultural ties between the two countries since ancient times. With the efforts of the Government of India and the Indian High Commission, India is now also emphasizing on developing places associated with Ramayana in the island nation. “On the occasion of Bak Purnima Poya Day, High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Dr Maithipe Wimalasara Maha Thera, Chief Functionary of Parama Dhamma Chethiya Pirivena Vena, inaugurated an exhibition on India’s Buddhist heritage at Pirivena,” the Indian Embassy in Colombo said in a statement.
