Bar Association to Skip Foundation Stone Ceremony of Gauhati High Court’s New Complex

The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has formally requested its members to refrain from attending the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new high court complex in Rangmahal, North Guwahati, scheduled for January 11. This decision reflects the GHCBA’s opposition to the proposed relocation of the high court, which they contend will impose significant hardships on both advocates and litigants. In conjunction with the boycott, the bar association members will engage in a hunger strike from 10 AM to 4 PM on January 8, 9, and 11, protesting against the shift to North Guwahati. This decision was made during an urgent extraordinary general meeting convened by GHCBA president Kamal Nayan Choudhury and general secretary Girin Pegu. They argue that moving the high court from its historic location will necessitate longer travel for those attending hearings, adding considerable financial strain to their existing obligations. The GHCBA’s stance emphasizes the importance of maintaining the court at its historical site for the benefit of all parties involved in the legal process.
