Bollywood Row Brews as Drishyam 3 Producer Accuses Actor of Contract Breach

Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna is currently in the limelight due to the success of his latest film, Dhurandhar, at the box office. However, it has been reported that he is no longer involved in Drishyam 3. Producer Kumar Mangat Pathak has confirmed Khanna’s departure from the project and has publicly criticized him for choosing to withdraw just 10 days prior to the scheduled shooting.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kumar Mangat Pathak, the producer of Drishyam 3, revealed that the production team had finalized an agreement with actor Akshaye Khanna after several rounds of fee renegotiations initiated by Khanna. Additionally, it was mentioned that the actor had requested to wear a wig for his role, but director Abhishek Pathak persuaded him against it, citing practical concerns regarding continuity, given that Drishyam 3 is a sequel.

The producer mentioned that Akshaye initially comprehended the director’s perspective and consented to forgo his request. Nevertheless, Kumar Mangat Pathak asserted that individuals in Akshaye’s circle suggested that wearing a wig would enhance his appearance, prompting Akshaye to reiterate his demand. Despite the director’s openness to further discussions, Akshaye ultimately decided to withdraw from the film.

In a recent statement, a producer highlighted the significance of star power in the film industry, pointing out that the Drishyam franchise is led by Ajay Devgn, while Vicky Kaushal and Ranveer Singh star in Chhaava and Dhurandhar, respectively. He expressed doubt about Akshaye’s ability to lead a solo film to success, suggesting it wouldn’t exceed ₹50 crores in India. The producer criticized Akshaye’s belief in his own stardom, arguing that the success of ensemble films relies on various factors, and indicated that the achievements of Dhurandhar are influenced by multiple complexities beyond just Akshaye’s participation.

When Kumar Mangat Pathak presented the script at his Alibaug farmhouse, it was met with great enthusiasm, leading the actor to declare it a ₹500 crore film. After expressing admiration, they negotiated fees, signed an agreement, and the actor received an advance, with costs for his clothing designer covered. However, ten days prior to shooting, he chose to withdraw from the project.

Jaideep Ahlawat has replaced Akshaye Khanna in the project, as confirmed by the producer, who cited Ahlawat as a better actor and person. Kumar Mangat Pathak reported losses due to Khanna’s behavior and has initiated legal action, sending a legal notice that Khanna has not yet responded to.

This development highlights the success of the film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, which has become Bollywood’s highest-grossing film in India, earning ₹1003 crore worldwide and ₹647 crore net domestically. Akshaye plays the role of Rehman Dakait, receiving praise for his performance. Additionally, the release date for Drishyam 3, starring Ajay Devgn, has been set for October 2, 2026, with production currently underway and the cast reprising their roles.
