British Museum’s Richard Blurton Delivers Lecture on Vrindavani Vastra and Assam’s Cultural Heritage at Gauhati University

Internationally renowned archaeologist and former Head of the South and Southeast Asia Department at the British Museum, Mr. Richard Blurton, participated in an important interactive session with faculty members and students at Gauhati University. Dr. Ballepu Kalyan Chakravarthy, Additional Chief Secretary of the Government of Assam, was also present at the event. The discussion focused on Assam’s civilizational heritage.

Mr. Blurton placed Assam’s artistic and devotional traditions within a broader international context, delivering a lecture centered particularly on the historically and culturally significant Vrindavani Vastra. Describing it as “more than a work of art,” he stated that it represents a cultural imagination shaped by faith, society, and storytelling, and emphasized the need for continuous research and preservation.

The session featured in-depth discussions on textile traditions, sacred heritage, and artistic creation. Teachers, researchers, and students shared their views on the importance of positioning Assam’s heritage within the global academic landscape.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nani Gopal Mahanta remarked that Vrindavani Vastra is a profound symbol of Assam’s spiritual consciousness and craftsmanship. Referring to the eternal legacy of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, he stated that Gauhati University remains committed not only to rigorous academic research but also to preserving the region’s cultural foundations.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the philosophical depth of institutions like the Namghar, describing them as symbols of both form and formlessness. He further noted that traditions such as Ankiya Bhaona beautifully reflect the integration of devotion and art within the Bhakti movement.

Academic Registrar Professor Rajiv Sandikai, Controller of Examinations Professor Kandarpa Kumar Sharma, and other distinguished guests were also present at the event.

By hosting a global scholar like Richard Blurton, Gauhati University has further strengthened its position as a leading center for heritage research and cultural studies in Northeast India.
