The Assam Cabinet has approved the delimitation of Gaon Panchayats, Anchalik Panchayats, and Zilla Parishad constituencies, aimed at enhancing grassroots governance across the state. Alongside this, the Cabinet also celebrated the recognition of Assamese as a “Classical Language.”
In a landmark decision, the Cabinet expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting Assamese the prestigious “Classical Language” status. This recognition acknowledges the language’s rich cultural and literary heritage and is expected to aid in the preservation and digitization of ancient texts while creating job opportunities for local scholars.
As part of its grassroots governance reforms, the Cabinet approved the District Delimitation Commission’s recommendations. The number of Gaon Panchayats has been reduced from 2,197 to 2,193, and Zilla Parishad constituencies have decreased from 420 to 397, enhancing representation across 219 development blocks, including 181 in general areas and 38 in Sixth Schedule areas.
Additionally, the Cabinet greenlit the launch of Mission Basundhara 3.0, set to go live on October 19, 2024. The initiative focuses on land reforms, including digital settlements, relaxed domicile requirements for certain communities, and the conversion of land pattas through a digitized process, further advancing the state’s governance and land management framework.
