The Assamese diaspora stole the show at Nassau Coliseum as Prime Minister Narendra Modi bore witness to a dazzling celebration of Indian culture when he visited Uniondale, New York, on Sunday. The Assamese community brought excitement and festivity to the audience by performing the traditional Bihu dance, which was witnessed by over 25,000 people. The show promoted unity in diversity by bringing attention to India’s rich cultural legacy and introducing the diaspora to the country’s customs. With a focus on the significant role that Indian Americans play, the event, dubbed Modi&US, further strengthened ties between India and the US.
The large attendance demonstrated the strong support and reverence for Modi and the cultural identity of the Indian-American community, even though the venue could only hold 13,000 people. Assamese Sagarika Dutta Bhuyan, who resides in Pennsylvania, expressed her pride in being a part of the Bihu performance in a statement. “Showcasing our culture to Prime Minister Modi is an honor. She emphasized the strong emotional bond that exists between the diaspora and their own country by saying, “Bihu reminds us that our heritage remains with us, no matter where we are.”
The crowd found resonance in Modi’s address as he emphasized the diaspora’s contribution to advancing India-US relations and establishing shared ideals. Members did traditional Bollywood folk dances from Telangana, Bihar, and Gujarat. Prior to his address to the Indian community on Long Island, Indian chef and restaurateur Vikas Khanna was praising Prime Minister Modi as the head of the family, bringing everyone together. The “Modi and US” event’s chairman, Suhag Shukla, had earlier referred to the event as a celebration of the Indian-American community and emphasized its critical role in showcasing India’s culture outside.
