Ex-AAMSU Leader Rejaul Karim Sarkar Presses for Minority Inclusion in Key Administrative Posts

Former All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) president Rejaul Karim Sarkar on Wednesday advocated for wider representation of minority communities in district-level administration, asserting that regions with significant minority populations, including Bongaigaon and Dhubri, should have Deputy Commissioners from within those communities.

He was addressing a gathering during a cultural programme organised by the Tapattary Regional Youth Club at the Tapattary High School playground. The event, held in the minority-dominated Tapattary locality, drew participation from a large number of residents and young people. Beyond cultural performances, the programme provided a platform for discussion on social and political issues, particularly those related to education, representation, and minority welfare. Sarkar described education as the most effective tool for social advancement and urged families to make it their highest priority. He stressed that financial challenges should not prevent children from pursuing education, emphasising equal importance for both boys and girls.

Calling for administrative structures that reflect local demographics, Sarkar said greater minority presence in leadership positions would help build trust, address community concerns, and strengthen inclusive governance at the district level. He also spoke about safeguarding dignity and rights, warning against any attempts to sideline or intimidate minority communities, and said such actions would be met with firm resistance.

Although the event concluded with cultural activities, Sarkar’s remarks dominated discussions among attendees, highlighting ongoing debates over educational access, fair representation in governance, and the broader socio-political issues facing minority communities.
