Gaurav Gogoi meets Hemant Soren, fuels alliance buzz ahead of Assam Assembly polls

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi held a meeting with Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, triggering speculation about possible political alliances ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
The meeting comes amid indications that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), led by Soren, may be exploring an entry into the political landscape of Assam.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Gogoi said the Assam Congress had reached out to leaders in Jharkhand to strengthen coordination ahead of the elections. He noted that discussions were held with the state Congress leadership to explore ways to further strengthen the party’s organizational structure before the polls.
“Considering the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, we are here to discuss and coordinate with the Jharkhand Congress leadership. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had earlier visited Assam and observed the political situation, and we will try to make a courtesy call on him during this visit,” Gogoi said.
He also mentioned that the Assam Congress had sought support from leaders in Jharkhand and requested a meeting with Soren to exchange views on the political scenario.
Confirming the meeting, Soren said discussions were held regarding strategies for the upcoming Assam elections. “Our discussions focused on formulating strategies for the elections in Assam,” he said.
The development has sparked speculation that the JMM could expand its political footprint beyond Jharkhand and play a role in Assam’s electoral politics.
Earlier this week, Soren attended a political meeting organised by the Jai Bharat Party at Mijika in the Biswanath district of Assam on March 10. The gathering saw the participation of local leaders and supporters as discussions around potential political collaborations intensified.
At the event, Jai Bharat Party’s central president Teharu Gour announced that the party was planning to form an alliance with the JMM to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
According to Gour, the proposed alliance aims to contest around 40 of the state’s 126 Assembly seats, expressing confidence that the partnership could emerge as a significant political force in Assam’s political landscape.
