GCPL launches a moving digital film titled ‘Hands That Speak’

Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) marked International Labour Day with the launch of a moving digital film, ‘Hands That Speak,’ celebrating inclusivity in the workforce. The film focuses on the diverse employees, including those with hearing and speech disabilities, at GCPL’s flagship greenfield manufacturing facility in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu. Through Indian Sign Language (ISL), employees share their stories, highlighting how their hands communicate strength, precision, and pride, redefining traditional notions of voice and contribution.

The film underscores GCPL’s commitment to fostering diversity, with the Chengalpattu plant employing 50% women and 5% people with disabilities (PWD) and LGBTQIA+ individuals. By showcasing these silent strengths, GCPL aims to inspire other industries to embrace inclusive hiring practices and break down societal barriers. The initiative also draws attention to the fact that despite India having nearly 30 million PwDs, only 11% are meaningfully employed.

In Guwahati, where inclusive employment practices are still evolving, GCPL’s ‘Hands That Speak’ offers a significant model. Local businesses can learn from such initiatives by focusing on creating more opportunities for persons with disabilities, ultimately contributing to a diverse and skilled workforce, which is crucial for innovation and growth in the region.
