With diabetes closely linked to cardiovascular risks, experts are urging lifestyle changes and advanced monitoring tools to help manage both conditions effectively. According to research, individuals with diabetes have double the risk of developing heart disease due to elevated blood sugar damaging blood vessels and nerves.
Dr. Nripen Das, Senior Internist & Consultant at Caremed Cardio-Diabetic Centre, Guwahati, stressed the importance of preventative care: “In India, heart-related complications are rising among younger diabetics. Proper management through a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can significantly reduce cardiovascular risks.” Dr. Kenneth Lee, Director of Medical Affairs at Abbott, emphasized CGM devices’ role in tracking glucose levels and improving Time in Range (TIR), which reduces heart disease markers. A 10% increase in TIR can lower carotid artery thickness by 6.4%.
In Guwahati, there is growing demand for CGM devices and heart-healthy foods, reflecting rising awareness of diabetes’ link to heart health. Pharmacies and wellness centers are witnessing increased inquiries about advanced glucose monitors and dietary solutions. Experts also recommend stress management and avoiding smoking and alcohol to mitigate risks. Consumers are encouraged to consult healthcare providers for personalized plans to protect heart health while managing diabetes effectively.
