Guwahati Airport’s Terminal 2 Launch Showcases Assam’s Culture with First Air India Flights

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the arrival of the first flight at the new Terminal 2 of Guwahati airport reflected the state’s culture, language, and traditional hospitality, as Air India and Air India Express began full operations from the new facility.The Chief Minister said the welcome extended to passengers showed the essence of Assam. He highlighted that guests were greeted with traditional elements such as narikolor laru and gamusa, giving them a glimpse of the state’s identity from the moment they arrived.The first Air India flight to land at Terminal 2 of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport was AI 879 from Delhi. Its return leg, AI 880 to Delhi, became the airline’s inaugural departure from the new terminal.

Passengers on the inaugural flight were served traditional Assamese sweets, while the first check-in passenger was honoured with a gamusa. The move was seen as an effort to connect travel with local culture and create a unique experience for visitors.Air India Express also began its operations from the new terminal with flight IX 1517 from Kolkata, which later departed for Imphal, marking its first movement from the facility.Officials said the launch of operations at Terminal 2 is a major step towards improving air connectivity in the Northeast. The new terminal is expected to handle increasing passenger traffic and provide better services.

Currently, Air India operates two daily return flights between Delhi and Guwahati. Air India Express runs 17 daily flights connecting Guwahati to cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, and Kolkata.
