Guwahati Cab Drivers Shave Heads Over High Cuts By Apps

Hundreds of app-based cab drivers gathered in Guwahati’s Sachal on Tuesday, protesting by collectively shaving their heads. Led by the Assam Rajyik Chalak Santha, the drivers raised slogans demanding urgent government action against worsening conditions under platforms like Uber, Ola, and Rapido.

One driver expressed frustration, saying the government’s indifference forced them to take this dramatic step. They accuse cab aggregators of exploiting them by deducting 30–40% commission on earnings, allegedly violating a Supreme Court order, with little action from the Assam Transport Department.

Drivers highlighted shrinking profits due to rising fuel costs and traffic, with one stating that a 10-km ride pays Rs 140–150, but Rs 100 goes just toward fuel, leaving meager earnings. Many are burdened by debt after buying commercial vehicles, only to face competition from private cars allowed commercially, hurting their business.

Additional issues include high airport parking fees following Adani Group’s takeover, causing police harassment. Some drivers struggle financially, unable to pay rent or see their families.

Urging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene, they warned of intensified protests if their demands remain unaddressed.
