Guwahati and North Lakhimpur have emerged as the top achievers in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024–25, earning the title of “Promising Swachh Sheher of Assam.”
The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, attended by Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the achievement on social media, calling Guwahati the cleanest capital in the Northeast after securing Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus certification and a 1-Star Garbage Free City (GFC) rating.
“This shows Assam’s commitment to urban hygiene,” he wrote, crediting residents and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) for this success. Mayor Sarania described the recognition as the outcome of coordinated efforts and public participation, calling it motivation to build a greener and inclusive Guwahati.
Guwahati improved its rank to 44 out of 95 in the 3–10 lakh population category, a major leap from 402 last year. North Lakhimpur rose to 155 out of 820. Six Assam cities also earned ODF++ status, marking a strong step toward sustainable cleanliness.
