JBF is launching a free rabies vaccination program for dogs

JBF (Just Be Friendly), in collaboration with Mission Rabies WVS and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), has formally launched a free antirabies vaccination program for both free-roaming and keeper dogs with the keepers, marking a major step in the fight to eradicate rabies. The first part of the program began early on February 20 at GMC Ward No. 1, next to Khanamukh Bridge. On its first day, local stakeholders, including the Ward 1 Councillor and citizens, strongly supported the project.

A trial project in the districts of Kamrup, Sonitpur, and Majuli will follow the initial phase in Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) areas. To promote important information on rabies prevention, JBF, Mission Rabies WVS, GMC, and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Assam, are running awareness campaigns in schools, hospitals, and public areas in addition to the vaccine campaign.

In addition to enhancing rabies surveillance through Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM), the “Guwahati Metropolitan Area Rabies Project” has set the lofty goal of vaccinating at least 70% of the city’s dog population. The organization has also established a dedicated hotline at 9706049585, which allows the public to report any suspected rabies cases, in an effort to further promote community engagement. This program is a vital step in the worldwide effort to eradicate rabies by 2030 and will help Assam become rabies-free.
