Major drug seizure in Assam’s Dhubri district

In a major breakthrough in Assam’s fight against narcotics, police arrested a woman in Golakganj under Dhubri district late Tuesday night after recovering a cache of Yaba tablets, a potent synthetic drug gaining a foothold in the region. The accused, Sofiya Khatun (35), a resident of Koimari Part IV, was apprehended by Golakganj police during a targeted anti-narcotics operation. Officers found 120 Yaba tablets in her possession. Khatun is the wife of Matiar Rahman, also a local resident. She was taken into custody on the spot and is currently being interrogated for further leads. The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on drug peddling networks along Assam’s border regions, particularly in districts like Dhubri that are vulnerable due to their proximity to international boundaries and porous terrain.

Police sources revealed that preliminary investigation suggests Khatun may not have acted alone, and authorities are working to determine the source of the contraband. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of a larger interstate or cross-border syndicate being involved. “Yaba tablets have emerged as a dangerous trend in recent years, especially in the northeastern states. These tablets, a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, are highly addictive and pose a serious health risk, particularly to young people,” said a senior police officer familiar with the operation.

The seizure underscores the increasing challenge law enforcement faces in combating synthetic drugs, which are often smuggled through hidden channels and sold discreetly in local markets. Police have vowed to intensify surveillance and conduct more raids in suspected hotspots across border districts like Dhubri, Karimganj, and Hailakandi, where drug trafficking networks are believed to be active.
