Rakibul Hussain, Member of Parliament from the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency and senior Congress leader in the Lok Sabha on Thursday urged that the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge over the Brahmaputra be named after Zubeen Garg. “Zubeen Garg was not just a singer. He was a pride and an identity of the Assamese nation. Among the greatest artistes who carried Assamese music and the Assamese identity to the national and international stage, Zubeen Garg was one of the foremost. To honour such a legendary artiste, I appeal that the Dhubri–Phulbari bridge be named after Zubeen Garg,” the MP stated.
He also informed the House that he would be meeting the concerned Union Minister regarding the matter. It may be recalled that on Wednesday, Gaurav Gogoi, MP from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency and President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, demanded in the Winter Session of Parliament that India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, be conferred upon Assam’s legendary artist Zubeen Garg
