Nestlé India is spearheading a groundbreaking transformation in dairy farming practices with its innovative ‘Biodigester Project’, marking a paradigm shift towards sustainability in the industry. The project, aimed at reducing emissions and fostering livelihoods, utilizes cutting-edge biodigester technology to convert cattle manure into clean biogas. By deploying nearly 70 large biodigesters and over 3,000 small units across 24 districts in Punjab and Haryana, Nestlé India is paving the way for a greener future.
Exposure of cattle manure in small dairy farms poses a significant environmental challenge, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. However, the Biodigester Project addresses this issue by harnessing microbial breakdown to produce biogas, effectively reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating health hazards associated with smoke exposure.
Sanjay Khajuria, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Nestlé India, underscored the project’s strategic alignment with India’s sustainability objectives, emphasizing its role in resource optimization and regenerative agriculture.Local dairy farmer Mandeep Kaur lauded the project’s impact on her farm in Jalalabad village, Moga district, citing increased self-sufficiency and substantial savings. The adoption of biogas for cooking has not only enhanced environmental sustainability but also improved health outcomes for farmers.
