The governments of Mizoram and Assam have taken a significant step towards resolving their long-standing inter-state boundary dispute by signing a new Joint Statement today at the State Guest House in Aizawl. The agreement was signed by K. Sapdanga, Mizoram’s Home Minister, and Atul Bora, Assam’s Minister for Border Protection & Development, marking a renewed commitment to peace and cooperation between the two states.
Building on the ‘Goodwill Mission’ initiated earlier this year, the agreement reinforces the commitment made in February 2024 by the Chief Ministers of both states. The focus remains on fostering peace and preventing conflicts along the border.
Key highlights of the agreement include:
- Both states will collaborate to organize joint cultural and sports festivals aimed at enhancing community engagement and understanding. These events are scheduled to begin before January 31, 2025.
- The states reaffirmed their dedication to resolving border disputes peacefully. A series of meetings will be conducted by officials from both governments, with the next ministerial-level meeting scheduled for Guwahati, Assam, before March 31, 2025.
- Both governments reiterated their commitment to strictly enforce regulations against the smuggling of arecanut.
- Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from both states will hold monthly virtual meetings and biannual in-person meetings to address issues and reinforce border harmony.
