New Projects to Usher in Era of Connectivity and Growth in Assam: Centre

Indian Railways is launching multiple initiatives to enhance connectivity and economic growth in Assam and the Northeast region, coinciding with the Prime Minister’s visit on March 13–14. These projects are part of a broader modernization effort of the region’s railway infrastructure to improve passenger mobility, support trade, and integrate the Northeast with the national railway network. A significant project is the laying of the foundation stone for the Furkating–Tinsukia rail line doubling project, which stretches 194 km and aims to alleviate congestion by increasing train capacity for both passenger and freight transport. Additionally, a Periodic Overhauling (POH) Workshop will be established in Kokrajhar district to enhance regional railway maintenance by servicing coaches and wagons locally, reducing downtime and operational inefficiencies while also generating local jobs. To strengthen sustainable operations, the Prime Minister will dedicate several electrification projects including the Rangiya–Murkongselek (558 km), Chaparmukh–Dibrugarh (571 km), and two lines in Badarpur (315 km), totaling over 1,400 km of newly electrified track. Furthermore, three new train services will be introduced to bolster travel options within the Northeast and its connections with the rest of the country.
