A new report from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB) and SP Jain Institute of Management & Research reveals that skill is a far more critical factor than chance in determining success in fantasy sports. The study, “Decision Support System for Policy-Making: Quantifying Skill and Chance in Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)”, presents robust data showing that players’ skills—reflected in experience and past performance—substantially impact their performance outcomes.
The research, led by Professor U Dinesh Kumar, analyzed data from 2,951 matches and 160,000 contests, highlighting that experience and recent participation significantly enhance a player’s winning consistency. The study found that experienced players and those who participate regularly perform better, reinforcing that fantasy sports are more skill-based than games of chance.
In Guwahati, this study’s findings could reshape local gaming regulations and support for the fantasy sports sector. As the market for fantasy sports expands in Guwahati, understanding the skill-based nature of these games could influence policy adjustments and boost the growth of legitimate gaming enterprises in the region.
