NHPC Achieves Key Milestone in 2,880-MW Dibang Project with Tunnel Breakthrough

State-run hydropower major NHPC Limited has marked a significant construction milestone in the 2,880-MW Dibang Multipurpose Project with the successful daylighting of Diversion Tunnel-3 (DT-3). The breakthrough represents a crucial step forward in one of India’s largest hydropower projects currently under development in Arunachal Pradesh.
The final blast for the tunnel breakthrough was symbolically initiated by NHPC Director (Projects) Sanjay Kumar Singh, who pressed the control button during a ceremony attended by senior officials. Among those present were Executive Director and Head of Project Narender Kumar, Executive Director (PMSG) Umesh Kumar Nand, and representatives from engineering partner Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
Daylighting of a diversion tunnel is a critical engineering achievement in dam construction, allowing river water to be rerouted and enabling further structural work on the dam foundation. With DT-3 now completed, project execution is expected to gather further momentum.
Congratulating the engineers, workers, and stakeholders involved, the Director (Projects) praised their technical expertise and coordinated teamwork in reaching the milestone. He expressed confidence that NHPC and its contractors would maintain close collaboration to meet upcoming construction targets and ensure timely delivery of the ambitious project.
The Dibang Multipurpose Project, once completed, is expected to significantly boost India’s renewable energy capacity while also providing flood moderation and other regional development benefits. The successful tunnel breakthrough underscores steady progress in advancing strategic hydropower infrastructure in the Northeast.
