Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to investigate forming a joint holding company. The move seeks to harness synergies for achieving carbon neutrality, advancing vehicle intelligence, and adapting to rapid changes in automotive technology.
The agreement, finalized on August 1, builds on a strategic collaboration initiated in March to develop next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and foundational technologies. If successful, the integration could consolidate resources, enhance operational efficiency, and boost corporate value in the long term.
“This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both companies,” said Makoto Uchida, CEO of Nissan. “Together, we aim to deliver unmatched innovation and value to our customers.” Honda’s CEO Toshihiro Mibe highlighted the necessity of combining efforts to tackle environmental and industry challenges, with a final decision on the integration expected by January 2025. Key areas of synergy include standardized vehicle platforms, optimized manufacturing processes, integrated research and development functions, and streamlined supply chains. The proposed joint holding company, slated for listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by August 2026, would oversee both Nissan and Honda as wholly-owned subsidiaries.
