North Guwahati Schools Shine at National Level with Wipro Earthian Award

Two schools from North Guwahati have earned national acclaim after winning the prestigious Wipro Earthian National Award, showcasing the growing impact of student-driven environmental education in Assam.

North Guwahati Girls’ High School emerged as a national winner for the second consecutive year, with a five-member student team guided by teacher Dulumoni Rabha. The team—Arpita Das, Indrani Deka, Gargi Mazumdar, Karismita Das (Class IX) and Manjita Hazarika (Class VII)—was selected from more than 2,000 entries submitted from across India, including 75 projects from Assam.

The award-winning project, organised under a programme by Aaranyak in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Assam, focused on sustainability and biodiversity conservation. Students undertook extensive fieldwork, including documentation of local biodiversity, wildlife surveys, microhabitat studies, bird observation, and analysis of climate change impacts on livelihoods. They also conducted awareness campaigns on endangered species such as the Gangetic river dolphin, vultures and the greater adjutant stork, while engaging local communities through outreach activities.

Adding to North Guwahati’s success, Auniati Kamaldev Higher Secondary School (AKHSS)—one of the oldest educational institutions in the region—also won the Wipro Earthian National Award this year. Its student team, Shrutaswinee, was recognised for a project on water sustainability.

Led by science and mathematics teacher Dr Akashi Baruah, the AKHSS team examined water-related challenges faced by the school and neighbouring areas. Emphasising the urgency of sustainable water management in a country facing severe water stress, the students incorporated inputs from local residents, scholars and experts from IIT Guwahati. The project also included awareness programmes aimed at promoting responsible water use. The team comprised Mayur Das, Amal Sarmah, Lobo Kalita, Jeet Dutta, Kankan Kalita and Ankur Das.

AKHSS, established in 1867, has a long tradition of academic excellence and has produced achievers in science, sports, music and literature at both national and international levels.

Reacting to the achievement, Dulumoni Rabha said the awards reflect the increasing role of schools in shaping environmentally conscious citizens. Dr Akashi Baruah termed the recognition a proud moment, noting that it highlights Assam’s commitment to sustainability-driven education on a national platform.
