Proactive dietary changes crucial in managing India’s rising pre-diabetes cases: expert insights

With a significant rise in pre-diabetes cases in India, now affecting an estimated 136 million people, healthcare experts are emphasizing the importance of early intervention through diet and lifestyle changes. Dr. Rohini Patil, an MBBS and nutritionist, has highlighted clean and mindful eating as a key strategy to manage and potentially reverse pre-diabetes.

Dr. Patil advises incorporating nutrient-rich foods like almonds, green leafy vegetables, Greek yogurt, lean proteins, and whole grains into daily diets. Almonds, in particular, have shown promise in reducing blood sugar levels, with studies indicating their potential to reverse pre-diabetes when consumed regularly. “A handful of almonds before meals can stabilize blood sugar,” Dr. Patil notes.

She also recommends an active lifestyle, stressing the importance of at least 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week. Walking, yoga, or moderate exercise can help prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes. In Guwahati, the demand for these healthy food options is expected to rise as more individuals become aware of the importance of dietary choices in managing pre-diabetes. Local vendors are increasingly stocking up on almonds, leafy greens, and whole grains to meet the growing consumer interest in preventive health measures.
