Senior Leader, Ex-Union Minister Biren Singh Engti Dies

Former Union Minister and respected political figure from Karbi Anglong, Biren Sing Engti, passed away on Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Guwahati, leaving behind a significant legacy. He was 81 years old and had an extensive career as a distinguished parliamentarian, having represented his constituents in the Lok Sabha for five terms through elections held in 1977, 1984, and 2009. Additionally, Engti served as the former Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences, emphasizing that Engti’s death is a profound loss for the state. He acknowledged Engti’s commitment to public service and development in the hill areas, stating that his contributions would always be remembered.

Engti’s impact on the political landscape in Karbi Anglong was notable, as he played a crucial role in shaping political discourse and promoting democratic participation in the hill districts. KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang also shared his condolences, highlighting Engti’s stature as a leader who represented the aspirations and identity of the Karbi people.

Ronghang noted Engti’s educational background, mentioning that he held a master’s degree in political science and a Law degree from Gauhati University, after completing his undergraduate studies at Nowgong College. The KAAC CEM reflected on the loss, stating that it not only affects Karbi Anglong but also the broader political community of Assam. He remarked that Engti’s legacy of dedication and leadership would continue to inspire future generations, extending heartfelt condolences to Engti’s family and all who mourn his passing.
