In a major breakthrough against cross-border drug trafficking, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police foiled a high-stakes narcotics operation on Friday, seizing banned substances worth a staggering ₹71 crore from the Amingaon area in Kamrup district. Two individuals involved in transporting the drugs have been arrested, officials confirmed.Acting swiftly on a specific intelligence input, STF personnel launched a meticulously planned operation and intercepted two suspicious vehicles entering Assam from a neighbouring state. Upon thorough inspection, the team recovered 2.7 lakh Yaba tablets—popularly known as the “crazy drug”—along with 520 grams of high-grade heroin concealed in 40 soap boxes.
Yaba, a highly addictive tablet containing methamphetamine, is banned under Indian law due to its potent psychoactive effects. Often trafficked in bulk for rave parties and illicit recreational use, the drug has been at the centre of numerous smuggling cases across northeastern India. According to officials, the market value of the seized Yaba tablets is estimated at ₹67 crore, while the heroin consignment is valued at ₹4 crore. The drugs were reportedly en route to destinations outside Assam, suggesting the operation was part of a larger trafficking network. STF chief Parthasarathi Mahanta led the operation, with critical support from Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Pathak. Both couriers are now in police custody and are being interrogated for further links to drug syndicates operating along inter-state and international routes.
“The seizure is a significant blow to the drug cartels operating in the region,” said an STF official. “Our teams are continuing with the investigation, and more arrests may follow as we trace the origin and end-destination of the consignment.” Assam has increasingly become a transit point for synthetic drugs and heroin trafficked from across the international border. The state police have ramped up surveillance, especially in sensitive border zones, to counter the growing menace of drug smuggling.
