A groundbreaking survey by ITC’s Sunfeast Mom’s Magic has found that only 7% of daughters in India receive equal inheritance rights through wills, revealing persistent gender biases in family inheritance practices. The campaign, titled ‘Will of Change,’ aims to inspire mothers to advocate for equal inheritance rights for their daughters, challenging the outdated notion that “betiyan paraya dhan hoti hain” (daughters are ultimately someone else’s responsibility).
Ali Harris Shere, Chief Operating Officer of ITC’s Biscuits & Cakes Cluster, stated, “Mothers, who often face unfair treatment in inheritance, can spark change within their families.” The campaign includes a poignant film featuring Shefali Shah and Manish Chaudhari, highlighting the emotional struggle of a mother confronting her husband’s biased will-making decisions.
In Guwahati, the initiative has garnered significant attention, with local mothers increasingly willing to challenge societal norms and advocate for their daughters’ rights. As discussions around inheritance equality gain momentum, Sunfeast Mom’s Magic is poised to drive a transformative change, empowering mothers in Assam to become true #MomOfChange.
