Tata Power has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam Government to develop up to 5000 MW of renewable and clean energy projects, including solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage. The initiative, announced at Advantage Assam 2.0, involves an investment of ₹30,000 crore over the next five years.
The agreement was signed between Dr. Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary (Power), Government of Assam, and Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Under the MoU, Assam will provide 20,000 acres of encumbrance-free land, facilitate statutory approvals, and support infrastructure development for transmission connectivity and Renewable Energy Parks.
Tata Power’s subsidiary, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), also signed an MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to boost rooftop solar adoption under the Pradhan Mantri Surya GharMuftBijliYojana (PMSGY). These projects are expected to create 3,000 job opportunities in the state. The initiative will significantly benefit Guwahati’s commercial sector, ensuring more stable and cost-effective power for industries, markets, and tea estates. Businesses in the city are expected to see improved energy efficiency and reduced operational costs, further positioning Guwahati as a hub for clean energy adoption. Dr. Praveer Sinha stated that the collaboration aligns with Tata Power’s commitment to India’s renewable energy goals and Assam’s ambition of achieving 500 MW solar capacity by 2027.
