Terra Filters, a revolutionary invention patented by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), continues to stand as a beacon of hope in emergency situations, especially in areas ravaged by natural disasters like during floods. Designed to provide up to 1000 litres of safe drinking water during crises, these filters have emerged as a vital lifeline for communities grappling with contaminated water sources. The Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS) responded to the devastating floods in the Barak Valley by constructing terra filters.
Terra Filters deployment, helps achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for all. Floodwaters breached the Bethukandi embankment, leaving most areas in Cachar district submerged and the Barak valley isolated.
SEEDS, through its Project Ashraya India Flood Relief, constructed 10 Terra Filters across four panchayats in Cachar district, Assam, to empower communities and restore normalcy. The initiative provides clean and safe drinking water to 1500 families, aiming to empower them to be resilient in emergencies following previous floods. CoFounder and Director of SEEDS Dr Manu Gupta, “The SEEDS team has a decade long presence in the State and has strategically worked over the past two years to ensure that the building back of schools and primary health centres is powered to incorporate community resilience as well.”
