The goal is to complete border fencing by 2026 as the project gains momentum

After nearly 20 years of interruptions, fencing along the 443-km Indo–Bangladesh border in Meghalaya is progressing, with completion expected by the end of 2026. Approximately 20 km of fencing was operational last year, despite legal disputes, objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and local resistance causing delays. Land acquisition for an additional 21 km is complete, with work starting soon. IG Upadhyay stated that while zero-line fencing is not feasible due to international agreements and terrain, all gaps will be closed by 2026. The BSF is also enhancing security with modern surveillance equipment, and repairs on existing fencing using stronger designs are underway.
