Tirap tribal belt’s special status welcomed by Gorkha community

The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved a proposal to grant special reserved category status to six indigenous communities, including the Gorkhas, under Chapter X of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Act, 1886, specifically in the Tirap tribal belt of Tinsukia district. This was a historic step meant to address long-standing demands. Chief Minister Dr. Sarma has received accolades from the All Assam Gorkha Sammelan for taking a major step in securing the Gorkhas’ land rights in the Tirap region. Laxmi Chhetri, the Central General Secretary of the group, commended the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union and the Assam Nepali Xahitya Xabha for their efforts to promote the rights of the Gorkha people.

The Gorkha Sammelan has expressed gratitude to the Assam government for its continuous efforts to resolve the pressing issues facing the Gorkha community in recent years, notably those pertaining to land. For their united support, the group thanked Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister for Tribal Affairs Dr. Ranoj Pegu, and the entire Council of Ministers. Other significant issues, such as education and cultural preservation, have also been discussed with the administration; the Gorkha Sammelan expressed hope that these issues will also be resolved swiftly and amicably.
