The All India Trinamool Congress’s Assam unit staged a symbolic protest in Guwahati on Saturday, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party government of failing to address rising prices and other pressing public issues.
The demonstration was organised at Shaktigarh Path in the city, where party leaders and workers beat plates and utensils as a symbolic gesture to “thank” the government for what they described as “hollow development”.
Speaking to the media at the protest site, Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress media cell president Abhijit Mazumdar alleged that the state was suffering due to what he termed the BJP’s “false promises”. He said development existed only in advertisements while the cost of essential commodities continued to rise sharply.
Mazumdar claimed that the price of LPG cylinders and other essential goods had skyrocketed, placing a heavy burden on ordinary citizens, while the government remained silent on the issue. He also criticised the government over delays in addressing matters related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and alleged that promises made earlier were not fulfilled.
The TMC leader further said the party strongly condemned what it called the “failure” of the NRC process and the continued uncertainty over the issue of illegal immigration.
During the protest, party leaders and workers raised slogans against the BJP government and warned that if the government fails to control price rise and clarify its stand on key issues such as NRC, the party would launch a statewide mass movement in the coming days.
