Global communications platform Truecaller has launched a new feature called Family Protection in India, aimed at helping households stay safe from the growing threat of digital scams. The feature allows families to create a “Safety Circle” of up to five members, enabling them to collectively guard against fraud such as digital arrest scams, impersonation fraud and AI voice cloning. The rollout in India follows the feature’s earlier launch in several international markets including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia and Kenya. According to the company, the new tool is powered by the collective intelligence of more than 450 million users worldwide.
Family Protection is designed to safeguard entire households, especially elderly members who are often targeted by fraudsters. The system enables a digitally aware family member—referred to as the family’s “CTO” (chief technology officer)—to receive real-time fraud alerts and remotely hang up suspicious calls for other members. The feature also includes shared block lists, customizable security levels and a dashboard that helps monitor device safety settings across both Android and iOS devices. The service is free to use, although users can opt for a Premium Family Plan for additional advanced safety features.
“Just knowing who is calling is no longer enough. Today, the real question is whether the call is safe to answer,” said Rishit Jhunjhunwala. He added that the feature allows digitally aware members of a family to act as a safety anchor and protect others from increasingly sophisticated scams. With India undergoing rapid digital transformation, threats linked to mobile communication are shifting from minor nuisances to serious financial and emotional risks. In Guwahati, the introduction of such household-level security tools is expected to gain traction as smartphone usage and digital payments continue to grow rapidly in the region. Tech retailers and digital service providers in the Guwahati market note that increasing awareness about cyber fraud has pushed many families to look for reliable mobile security solutions.
