More than twenty years after the murder of Munna Majumdar in Silchar, a Fast Track Court in Cachar has sentenced three individuals, including businessman Dhanraj Surana, to life imprisonment. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Bankim Sharma on February 25. Surana, alongside his employees Ratan Debnath and Rinku Dev, was found guilty in connection with Majumdar’s death, which took place on November 5, 2004. After being taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Majumdar was declared dead, raising suspicions that led to public outrage and the imposition of a curfew to maintain order. The case, notable due to the employer-employee dynamic, captured significant public interest and has been viewed as one of the most prominent criminal cases in the area. Following extensive legal proceedings and evidence examination, the court’s decision has been interpreted as a strong stance against criminal impunity and emphasizes the judiciary’s commitment to justice, regardless of social or economic standing.
