Union Minister Pabitra Margheritalaunches Tai Ahom heritage conservation projects

Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita has launched several heritage conservation and infrastructure projects supported by the Tai Ahom Development Council (TADC), Government of Assam, across different locations in the Nazira LAC under the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency. The Chairman of the Tai Ahom Development Council, Mayur Borgohain, accompanied him during the programme.
The initiatives focus primarily on the preservation of historically significant Ahom heritage sites, Moidams, and community institutions in the region. Among the projects taken up are the construction of boundary walls for several historic Moidams, including Bailung Moidam at Bantung GP, costing 17 lakh, and Kuta Borphukan Moidam at Rohdoipukhuri GP, costing 30 lakh, both aimed at safeguarding these important cultural landmarks. Another significant initiative includes the redevelopment and renovation of the historic Prachin Namghar, established in 1860 at Bapuji Path in Nazira town, at a cost of 15 lakh, with support from the Tai Ahom Development Council.
Further strengthening heritage preservation efforts, construction of boundary walls has also been initiated for Ahom Moidams and the Piyoli Phukan Dol premises in Piyoli Phukan GP, with each project being supported with 25 lakh by TADC. During the visit, Shri Margherita also inaugurated the Borgohain Bongkhawali Head Office at Mechagarh, Sivsagar district, developed with financial assistance of ₹25 lakh from the Tai Ahom Development Council. On the occasion, the Minister appreciated the Borgohains for their longstanding contribution to society and nation-building, and acknowledged their role in preserving the cultural traditions and historical legacy of the Ahom community.
Additional projects launched during the programme include the construction of the boundary wall of Samaguri Moidam along with the Chao Cheng Ren and welcome gate with an allocation of 60.40 lakh, as well as Phase II of the boundary wall construction at Pangrao Moidam Khetra in Lalimchapori, supported with 25 lakh from TADC.
Minister Margherita also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of Assam under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for their continued support towards the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of the Tai Ahom community.
These initiatives reflect a continued commitment to preserving the rich cultural and historical legacy of the Tai Ahom community, while also strengthening local infrastructure around heritage sites and places of community importance in the region.
He also inaugurated a newly constructed Indoor Sports Stadium at the playground of Nagaon Bengali Higher Secondary School, developed with the support of 50 lakh from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) Fund in the presence of MLA of Nagaon Batadrava Constituency Rupak Sarmah. The facility is expected to strengthen sports infrastructure in the area and provide improved opportunities for local youth to pursue sporting activities.
