The Viraasat Special Handloom Expo, a major celebration of India’s handloom heritage, was inaugurated today at Mahavir Dharm Sthal, Fancy Bazar, Guwahati. The event, organized by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, will run until January 14, 2025. It was launched by Jayant B. Mangalpalli, Assistant Director (Design), Ministry of Textiles, Development Commissioner (Handloom), WSC Guwahati.
The Expo showcases a wide variety of handloom products, including Banarasi, Jamdani, Muga, Ikkat, and Mekhela Chador, among others. With live weaving demonstrations, the event offers visitors a firsthand experience of the intricate craftsmanship involved in creating these timeless textiles. Mangalpalli highlighted the importance of promoting sustainable and ethical fashion, stressing that such initiatives directly benefit artisans by ensuring fair trade and recognition.
In Guwahati, the Expo provides an excellent opportunity for local consumers to access high-quality handloom products, directly connecting them with skilled weavers. This boosts awareness of India’s textile heritage while promoting sustainable fashion. With the event running daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, the Expo is expected to draw significant footfall, further enhancing Guwahati’s position as a key hub for handloom and textile commerce in the region.
